Objectives

  1. To provide a pictorial view of interprocess communication
  2. To provide a clear understanding of concurrent processes
  3. To understand and illustrate IPC and its related function calls
  4. To illustrate the operations of the following UNIX system calls:
fork, execlp, open, close, pipe, msgctl, msgget, msgsnd,
msgrcv, semctl, semget, semop, write, read.

NOTE: As progression of the project continues, more system calls will be added.

  5. To present the overall operation of communication with UNIX
between the kernel and processes as well as processes themselves

The presentation of PATHFINDER will be in a two window format. One window will be a
textual illustration of information associated with the current user and current code
execution (refer to the list below) and the other window* will be a graphical representation
of each process described in the textual window. Therefore,
PATHFINDER will depict the following:

  1. user_id of user currently logged in
  2. process names and ids of executing processes/program
  3. current executing LOC (line of code)
  4. message queues
  5. interfacing system calls
  6. shared memory
  7. other information that is decided based on future design modifications
  8. * graphical representation of all of the above
