Project Difficulties

The following illustrates difficulties encounterd throughout development by the group:

  1. Trying to design a system without knowing exactly what it is supposed to do
or how it can be done. "I guess my first difficulty was trying to design a system
without having experience in designing anything." (TT)
  2. The parser tree in the compiler is too big. The number of leaves and nodes in a
parser tree need to be reset. The system call fork() is difficult to handle. We considered treating the child and
parent process separately in the _fork(). It solved the problem - so far. Also, since we
cannot save the information of the child and parent process at the same time in the _fork(),
we saved them separately: forkchild and forkparent. (YD)
  3. The time of process is one of the things to be displayed in the XWindow. In the wrapper
function, we get the time for the start of a system call and the end time of the system call
Based on these times, we calculated the elapsed time for a specific process. The difficulty
is also in the fork(). Here, we consider the time before the fork() runs and the times which
are the beginning in the child process and the beginning in the parent process. We think that
only considering the start and end time of the fork() is far from enough and won't give the user
any idea of the running of the fork(). (YD)
  4. How to get event log data from other running processes effectively. (WJ)
  5. Interfacing problems with the wrapper functions - ie. file format. (WJ).
  6. Defining an "event" and how should we handle it. (WJ)
  7. Combining a motif program and a xlib program into one to generate dynamic output.(AF)
  8. Ensuring that every member of the group is performing assigned tasks instead of concentrating
on the responsibilities of others. (LH)
