CEACS, Howard University Centers and Institutes

Howard Engineering faculty produce research results which are published in the nations leading scholarly journals. Engineering faculty have provided leadership in the five major centers of research at Howard.

Faculty initiative has been responsible for introducing CAD-CAM, artificial intelligence applied to power systems, materials science, and innovative design courses, thereby introducing our students to frontier technologies and increasing their skills and marketability.

Our College was one of eight HBCUs awarded a Department of Energy (DOE) grant to establish a Massie Chair of Excellence. Dr. Edward J. Martin, Department of Civil Engineering, was selected to fill the Dr. Samuel P. Massie Chair of Excellence after a national search to identify a candidate. Massie, one of the Nation's outstanding scientists and educators, recently retired from the U.S. Naval Academy. The Massie Chair was established by DOE in collaboration with Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering (AMIE) and its Fortune 500 corporate affiliates.

Current research thrusts include computerized medical imaging; electric power systems; environmental engineering and materials science. Interdisciplinary research is being conducted in environmental and water quality, communications and signal processing, materials science, large space structures, spacecraft guidance and control, power systems, software metrics, fault tolerant processing, experimental fluid mechanics, robotics and automated manufacturing and systems engineering.

The School participates in large-scale and interdisciplinary research through the following research centers and endeavors:

  • Center for Energy Systems and Control (CESaC)
  • Engineering Coalition of Schools for Excellence in Education and Leadership (ECSEL)
  • Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic Hazardous Substance Research (GLMAC)
  • H.U. Future Aerospace Science and Technology Center (HUFAST)
  • H.U. Materials Science Research Center of Excellence (MSRCE)
  • Institute for Multimedia Applications (IMA)
  • Institute for Science, Space and Technology (ISST)

Center for Energy Systems and Control (CESaC)

CESaC research has been largely supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Bonneville Power Administration, the Department of Water and Power of the City of Los Angeles, and NASA (Lewis). CESaC research is directed to enhancing the efficiency and economics of power system operation through the application of expert knowledge systems and programs and power utilization analysis. CESaC is a member of the National Center for Research in Electrical Power Systems (PSERC), a consortium consisting of Cornell, Howard, U. California/Berkeley, U. of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign and U. of Wisconsin/Madison. PSERC was established by the National Science Foundation in 1997 with a grant for $200,000 per year for five years. PSERC's purpose is to help the electrical power industry achieve the high performance capability necessary to meet the challenges of restructuring the nation)s electric-energy system. CESaC director: Dr. James H. Momoh, [email protected].

Engineering Coalition of Schools for Excellence and Leadership in Education (ECSEL)

The ECSEL Coalition, under the leadership of the Howard University School of Engineering, was awarded one of two $15 million grants made in fall 1990 by the National Science Foundation under the Undergraduate Engineering Education Coalitions (UEEC) Program. The grant was renewed in 1995. Employing the central theme, *Design Across the Curriculum,: ECSEL integrates the social sciences, humanities, environmental, business, economics, management, leadership skills and other nontraditional considerations into the engineering curriculum. ECSEL As focus is to significantly improve the quality of engineering education and its attractiveness to prospective students through design. The ECSEL member institutions are City College of New York, Howard University, MIT, Morgan State University, Penn State University, University of Maryland, and the University of Washington.

The overall director of ECSEL is Howard dean Dr. James H. Johnson, Jr.; the director of Howard ECSEL is Dr. Mobolaji Aluko, [email protected] or call (202) 806-6624/7116 for more details.

Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic Hazardous Substance Research Center

A consortium consisting of Howard U. (Civil and Chemical Engineering), the U. of Michigan and Michigan State U. was formed in 1989 under the auspices of the U.S.E.P.A. Region III-V Pair Hazardous Substance Research Center Grant. The grant provides for $1 million per year for five years to be shared by the Consortium. Named the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic Hazardous Substance Research Center, the initial focus is on the biodegradation of hazardous substances.

Howard director: Dr. James H. Johnson, Jr. [email protected]. The Grants Administrator may be reached by calling (202) 806-4790.

Howard University Future Aerospace Science and Technology Center (HUFAST)

In early 1995, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research awarded Howard a $3.2 million grant to establish HUFAST. The Center consists of faculty from Systems and Computer Science, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and the School of Business. HUFAST performs research in the technologies which support distributed-fault-tolerant computing as applied to C-4-I-- communications, command, control, computing and intelligence. Director: Dr. Arthur S. Paul. [email protected]

Howard University Materials Science Research Center of Excellence (MSRCE)

Concentrated research efforts have been applied to studies related to the understanding of aluminum gallium arsenide, aluminum arsenide, gallium arsenide and silicon carbide epitaxial layers used in the fabrication of resonant tunneling devices, microwave transistors and solar cells. MSRCE is also committed to educating minority researchers who can fill academic, government and industrial positions.

MSRCE contributes to the Nation's economic competitiveness by advancing the frontiers of knowledge through basic research. The Center also seeks to accelerate the application of new research to resolve the Nation's more practical, economically important problems. The Center provides faculty and students the opportunity to engage in research which will receive universal recognition in the relevant scientific community. This multidisciplinary program includes faculty from Electrical and Chemical Engineering and the departments of Physics and Chemistry at Howard.

In 1997, MSRCE joined Cornell, Penn State, UCSB and Stanford in an NSF-sponsored National Nanofabrication User's Network. Dr. Michael Spencer (Electrical Engineering) is the director of MSRCE [email protected]; Dr. Gary L. Harris and Dr. Steven L. Richardson are MSRCE associate directors. Other MSRCE principals are Drs. Mobolaji E. Aluko (Chemical Engineering), Joshua Halpern (Chemistry), Hideo Okabe (Chemistry) and Emmanuel K. Glakpe (Mechanical Engineering).

    Institute for Multimedia Applications (IMA)

IMA, a premiere facility valued at $2.5 million, is a state-of-the-art facility for conducting computer visualization, animation, and multimedia integration projects. IMA is a collaborative effort between Howard University and leading companies in the graphics and multimedia industry. Visit IMA's web site at www.imappl.org. Director: Dr. Todd Shurn. [email protected]

Institute for Science, Space and Technology (ISST)

The Institute for Science, Space and Technology operates with support from grants to facilitate the advancement of African American participation in science, engineering and technology.

ISST operates programs to facilitate increased support for research in science and engineering at HBCUs; enhance the quality of undergraduate engineering education; expose middle and junior high school students to quality precollege science and mathematics programs; train teachers to implement advanced technologies for strengthening student interest and achievements in precollege science and mathematics education; sponsoring conferences, symposia and meetings where leaders in business, government and education review plans and strategies for advancing mathematics, science and engineering education and issue reports which have been disseminated to policymakers.
