TASK2 Overview

Over the course of several years, MDA created a very large block of Graphical User Interface (GUI) software called Combat Battle Monitor (CBM). The CBM code was created by MDA IRAD in Flight Simulation. The CBM provides a 3-Dimensional God's eye view of the regional conflick, with real time in-flight representation of aircraft and missiles. The CBM user is able to see the lay of the land and sea terrain, as the aircrafts fly their respective missions. The aircrafts may be driven by real pilots or by a combination of pilots and simulated threat models.

The CBM code required a significant update because Silicon Graphics announced they would be dropping their proprietary Silicon_Graphics_GL language (IRISGL) and adopting an industry standard Open_GL language. Additionally, the CBM code was created using a mix of several versions of the proprietary IRISGL language, and was becoming costly to add new features. Therefore, to continue using CBM, the code required a translation from the proprietary IRISGL language to Open_GL.

During the summer of 1995 Howard University fulfilled the following requirements with respect to the Combat Battle Monitor source code:

The updated CBM code is presently operational on an IRIS workstation in Flight Simulation at McDonnell Douglas. Additionally, the CBM code will be used on DEC Alpha workstations in Flight Simulation, and ultimately be used as a key component of the J-MASS program with the Wright Lab and Agile Vu programs with NASA-Langley.
