Review of "Software Metrics: A Rigorous and Practical Approach"
by Robin Whitty, South Bank University, London
Reviewed in De Facto, the Ami Newsletter, Issue 17, February 1997.
The first edition (1991) of Norman Fenton's book quickly became
the "bible" of software metrics. For the second edition, he has
teamed up with the highly respected US industrialist, Shari Lawrence
Pfleeger and, as reflected in the title, the book has a more practical
flavour than before: not only in the case studies and advice on setting
up metrics programmes, but also in the real-life examples which have
been added to the somewhat weighty chapter on measurement theory.
The main reason to buy this book, however, lies in the fact that so much
has changed since the first edition: software process improvement is
now well-covered with descriptions of both the CMM and SPICE models.
Object-oriented metrics are covered, with a description of
Chidamber and Kemerer's famous metrics set. Developments in the
standards area such as TickIT and ISO 9126 are covered. Any metrics
practitioner needs to have this book.
