Data Communication I:

OPNET Modeler will be used in this introductory graduate telecommunications and computer networks course. OPNET Modeler will be presented as a tool for simulating predefined or user defined networks. The course requiring submitting 3 projects using OPNET. After completing these projects students will gain basic familiarity with OPNET Modeler operation and utility.

Project 1:

Problem Statement:

This project will exercise many of the techniques that you  have learned. The goal of this exercise is to provide you with a high-level specification, and let you solve the problem using IT Guru. Use node aggregation, and proper traffic modeling techniques (use as much background traffic as possible) to arrive at accurate answers to the questions.

Liquid Energy Company, with 30,000 employees, wants to understand the impact of rolling out a custom web application on their existing network. In particular, they  would like to study two issues:

1) What will be the impact of the network on the application? If we deploy this application to a small number of users, what will the response times be for a typical user at a large site office and at a small site office?

2) What will be the impact of the application on the network? In particular, what network upgrades will be necessary, both for hardware devices and link capacities?

Project 2:

Problem Statement:

Create an IEEE 802.11 network with each build on your campus being represented by a subnet/BSS.Each building contains 5-10 users. Each user uses a combination of FTP, HTTP, and Email an applications, use normal and  exponential distributions when defining these applications. Each building should contain a WLAN Access Point and interconnected through an IP cloud. The IP cloud should have a latency of 1 sec. Each connection to the cloud should have a Bandwidth no greater then 2 T1s ~ 3 Mbps. A server farm should be created and located in Dr. Rafi's office. Each server should only host one application.

Collect the following statistics:

Wireless LAN control traffic received w/ RTS/CTS and w/o RTS/CTS messaging.

Wireless LAN Access Delay w/ RTS/CTS and w/o RTS/CTS messaging.

The most highly utilized link within the IP core?

Server CPU utilizations

Global Statistics:

The number of collisions per BBS

The Data Dropped

The CPU for each Application Server should maintain an average Utilization

Remember only normal, exponential distributions can be used for defining your applications, i.e. packet inter-arrival time and packet size.
