Goal: This course is designed to introduce and engage first year engineering students in the engineering and design process. Focus is given to knowledge of ethical issues and relevance to society.

Objectives:

  1. Introduce students to CEACS
    1. Available resources (tutorial skills, other student services)
    2. Student organizations
  2. Increase students understanding of engineering and computer science
    1. Role of engineers
    2. Importance of what engineers do via forensic experience
  3. Introduce the design process
    1. Critical thinking and problem solving skills
    2. Design projects via hands-on design projects
    3. Role of research in the design process
  4. Understand role of technical and non-technical skills in the engineering design process

    1. Leadership skills
    2. Entrepreneurial issues
    3. Ethics
    4. Communications
    5. Teambuilding
    6. Time management

Learning Outcomes[1]: By the end of the semester, students will be able to

1.     Describe different types of engineering disciplines and identify role of each on a sample project.

2.     Identify student organizations and support units that match their needs, interests and goals.

3.     Work on a team to solve and present solutions to engineering problems (ABET outcome C

4.     Integrate research, planning and the design process into a working engineering prototype

5.     Present materials in oral and written format

Grading
