AIDS --- March 16, 1996 Our very own WHUR 96ers played The Force (Catholic University's security officers) in a March Madness basketball thriller! Proceeds from this basketballfest went to Pediatric AIDS Care and The House of Ruth. Representatives from both charitable organizations were on hand to explain what they were doing locally to prevent the spread of AIDS. We shot hoops from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Dufour Center on Catholic University's Campus. We lost 93-88, BUT... we took it all in stride! CHILDREN --- February 21, 1996
We know Black History Month is not just a time for reflecting on the past. It is also a time for giving back to the community. We joined reigning Miss Black USA, Sheila Mutamba Rugege, to visit cancer patients and children of the Howard University Hospital. We strived to make it an absolutely perfect Black History that patients would not forget; Miss Black USA performed and we passed out special Black History Month gifts! HOMELESSNESS---March 14, 1996 We realized that the serious drug problem in the Washington area is one of the key reasons that there are so many homeless people at the 2nd and D Streets Shelter in Northwest. For this reason we arranged for excerpts from the compelling drama D-Tox 101 to be presented to the enjoyment of these shelter residents. About 200 people attended this performance from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. Our own Bob Thomas of The Quiet Storm played one of the leading roles.
March 2, 1996 We made it possible for 20 of the homeless men and women from the Shelter at 2nd and D Streets and the House of Ruth to experience professionalism and elegance at the Howard University School of Business Fashion Show entitled "Dress for Success-A Fashion Obsession." We teamed with Howard University to enable residents to attend the show at Cramton Auditorium. June 22, 1996 Election politics was put aside when the Congressional Chorus made up of staffers from the offices of senators and congressmen of both parties presented a special concert of a Broadway show at the Capitol Hill United Methodist Church at 421 Seward Square at 7:30 p.m. We paired with the Congressional Chorus to give 40 residents from the CCNV and the House of Ruth tickets to enjoy the performance. June 23, 1996 We made it possible for 25 people from the CCNV shelter to enjoy the Shakespeare experience. Together with The Shakespeare Foundation, we enabled them to attend the performance of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure at the Carter Barron Theater. The Friends of the National Zoo provided a bus for transportation of the homeless individuals. The project was part of our ongoing aggressive community outreach program. July 23, 1996 Seven homeless women received the treat of a lifetime when they met Delores Jordan, mother of basketball great Michael Jordan. We sponsored this special luncheon along with the National Parents Day Coalition at the National Press Club. SENIOR CITIZENS --- March 21, 1996 We treated 150 female senior citizens to a view of some of the most charming and handsome black men ranging from ages 25-55. The twelve participants who were also models for the full color swimsuit calendar, "In the Beginning" strutted their stuff for the seniors at Fort Lincoln II Development Complex, 3001 Bladensburg Rd. NE. The fun began for the senior citizens at 4 p.m. EASTER --- March 30, 1996 We arranged an early Easter treat for future opera stars, victims of violence and area youth. Fourteen youngsters got the opportunity of a lifetime to meet with internationally acclaimed opera star and Washingtonian Denyce Graves after her concert at the Kennedy Center. We purchased the tickets for the youths and used our resources to obtain backstage passes for the excited youngsters. April 6, 1996 On April 6, we sponsored a charity basketball game to raise money for the Silver Hill Boy's and Girl's Club.
Mothers who have sickle cell anemia or mothers with children with the illness got a special treat! We sponsored a visit to the Sickle Cell Anemia Clinic of the Howard University's Hospital by the legendary rhythm and blues singer, Howard Hewett. From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. May 9, WHUR's staff joined the superstar in passing out mother's day gifts to the patients. May 9, 1996 Mothers Day was special for 100 homeless district mothers thanks to WHUR. As part of our community outreach program we teamed up with Martha's Table to provide a feast fit for a queen for these underpriveledged mothers. The Pre-Mother's Day Luncheon was on May 9, 1996 from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. at Martha's Table at 2114 14th Street NW. May 11,1996 We decided to treat 10 homeless women to a day of pampering at Jazzii's Hair Salon on 318 M Street to look their best on mother's Day. Our news personality, Renee Nash was on hand to greet the woman from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on behalf of our station as part of our on-going and aggressive community outreach program. May 11, 1996 We realize that there is no lonelier place to be on Mother's Day than in a jail cell. On May 11, from 3 to 4 p.m. we decided to brighten up the Mother's Day of the women at the new Correctional Treatment Facility of the DC Jail. Armed with 96 roses, hearts of love and smiling faces, our staff and community friends presented a dramatic and musical program. May 12, 1996 We wanted to make Mother's Day a little brighter and happier for 20 homeless and disadvantaged mothers here in the city. As a special Mother's Day treat, we teamed up with the Washinginton Ballet enabling the women to attend the Washington Ballet's three world premiers at 2 p.m. at the Terrace Theater of the Kennedy Center. Memorial Day --- May 23, 1996 We joined forces with the U.S. Navy and the Washington Ballet to provide 150 disadvantaged youngsters and adults the rare opportunity to see the Annual Spring Performance of the Washington Ballet at the George Washington Lisner Auditorium. This marked the first time many of these individuals had ever witnessed a live performance of ballet. In this special pre-memorial treat, 20 navy officers volunteered as chaperones for the children. Father's Day --- June 16, 1996 We wanted to make sure Father's Day would be very special for those families in the DC area impacted by violence over the past few years. We teamed up with Lefty's Barbecue so seven families would enjoy scrumptious North Carolina Hickory barbecue and a dynamic gospel show at Lefty's Barbecue at 2064 Crain Highway in Waldorf, MD. Patrick Ellis was on hand to emcee the afternoon as a part of our aggressive outreach program to help end the violence in our communities. TEEN PREGNANCY --- April 27, 1996 We are aware that teen pregnancy is a huge problem in our district so we sought to offer hope to DC's pregnant teens and moms through our first "Saving Our Sisters Conference." We joined the Howard University Student Association at Howard University and 50 local teenagers. The conference promoted sisterhood through panel discussion and workshops. WHUR news reporter Renee Nash spoke to the conference, providing information on counseling and healthcare and sought to give these young mothers a positive outlook on motherhood
