Object Oriented Technology Terms

Object - A person or thing through which action, thought, or feeling is directed. Anything visible or tangible; a material product or substance.

examples - sensor, customer, login, vehicle, warehouse

Classification - A type of object; grouping of objects.

examples - devices, motor vehicles, processors, sorting algorithms

Attributes - Properties or characteristics that all objects in a class possess.

example - everything object in class motor vehicles has a manufacturer, propellant type, brake

Whole-Part Relationships - A strong relationship between objects where one object is actually part of another object.

examples - books and pages, cars and wheels, windows and menus

Encapsulation - Packaging several items in a unit where the all unit interfaces are rigidly defined. This is also call information hiding, because a user only knows how to use objects, but not how they are implemented.

Polymorphism - Multiple forms of object performance. example - Tax Object has multiple forms of calculation depending on the object associated with it, like boat, auto or property. Inheritance - Transfer of class attributes to a new class. examples - A child inherits attributes from its parents. A mini-van has van attributes. Note: In Java a new class may only extend one superclass -- therefore Java only supports single inheritance.
