The Groove Master

He's encompassed by his fingers
making heat to melt the wax
He engenders bitter envy
as the smoke rolls off our backs
The air is gravy we wade through it
choking on our memories
Then diamond cut eyes glitter under his brim
Hypodermic needle poking under my skin
Elicits blood curdling adoration requiring
cardio-pulmonary rescusitation
I need 30 CCs - stat . . . clear
I caught a beat-down no pounding on my chest could heal
Revealing clots on my lungs, like spots on the sun
and an 8 inch needle wedged in my cardio-cavity
(that little place where my heart should be)

I rise above like the steam escaping from our breath
A momentary death, rebirth in hip-hop hell
with fire starting emcees and white chick wannabes
Miniature beats they spill, weakening the gush of their flow
I hold my breath until the stage is clear cause I know
that he'll be back to tease my ears
and tempt my eyes
Such a flirt - he rides the gain
amplifying the times my mind holds him in its gaze
Adjusting the velocity of beats, he speaks
a background rhyme

Forgive me but the needle grates, pulsates
and skips
Not missing arteries but leaving
just enough blood for me to love with
Fall entranced and dance and bug wit
Just enough blood to keep me on my feet
entombed by the boom of the woofers tweet
Just enough of somethin to keep half of me
from wonderin how much longer I can endure
the ridges, rocking, rickety - the stereo split like lickety
and half of me is all I need to see clearly
with one eye warily regarding my decline
I slide helplessly and angrily beneath the tile
where Timberlanded souls defer to reason
in perception of my gross transgressions as crimes

See, I slid to the floor unable to endure the wild cacauphony
of silence
While steady streamed an everlasting melody
tellin me, reality was just a figment of my imagination
out for instant gratification
Not taking the time to tow the line, or write the line, or bite the line -
I write, I rhyme, I reason definitions of him. . .
He is gory in his style,
He is generous with his smile
And a little too free, with who he decides to be

Been playing doctor without anesthetic
Dabbles as a paramedic
Shocks me into rhetoric with electricity

Pointedly the question gnaws at me
Won't get up and won't ignore me
'How'd you get so far away from who you claimed to be?'
I was dancing under water
blowing bubbles full of pride
Saw a fish I thought I oughta try to snag out on my line
I reached up and then grasped onto one damn slippery fin
Lost my balance and fell in
or out of what I thought was sanity
Got caught all up in vanity and beats and rhymes
and my wandering mind
Samples of a sweet riff frozen in time

Me, on the floor, looking up at the light
which is him - and the light goes out.

And its fire breathing dragons pulling me to the door
Looking up my skirt and singeing me more
Feeling like a record, all spun out and dizzy
Mangled by the needle
Scarred by fingerprints touching the grooves
Nodding my head to the beat of the groove
of the tune told on me
Recorded by my complascency
Imprinted onto my brains' synapses
an incision, misplaced as my resolve collapses
And my hope gives out
breathes its last breath and gets
grooved to death.
