Admission Requirements

Admission to Howard University is selective. Those who are admitted show strong personal motivation and a background of consistent academic growth and achievement. The University also attracts and seeks out socially and economically deprived students who show promise of gaining from a Howard education.

All applicants should take the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) in December, January, or March of the senior year in secondary school, but it is recommended that the test be completed not later than January of the year in which admission is desired. Applicants should write directly to the College Board, Box 592, Princeton, New Jersey 08541, or Box 27896, Los Angeles, california 90027, for information (obtainable without charge), including descriptions of the test, directions for filing the application, information about fees, and lists of examinations centers. When applying to take the test, applicants should request that scores be sent to the Office of Admissions at Howard University. American College Testing's ACT exam may be taken in lieu of the SATI.

To be considered for admission, applicants must submit the completed Howard University admission form, the application fee, an official secondary school transcript, results from the SAT I (or ACT), and the SAT II Subject test in Mathematics. A character recommendation must be furnished by the secondary school principal or counselor.

An applicant must be a graduate of a secondary school or have equivalent credentials. Those who rank in the upper half of their class in a secondary school accredited by a regional association or those who rank in the upper quarter of their class in a secondary school accredited by a state department of education will be admitted by certificate. Students seeking admission by this method may apply as early as the first half the senior year in secondary school. Secondary school graduates who do not conform to the specifications of admission by certificate may be considered for admission on the basis of their performance on the SAT I.

The secondary school program should consist of 15 units, including the following required units: English, 3; algebra, 1.5 or 2; geometry, 1; trigonometry, 0.5; history or civics, 1; and foreign languages, science, or social studies, 2. (A unit represents a year's study in any subject in a secondary school.) Since secondary schools vary considerably in their curricula, requests for exceptions or substitutions in the minimum program will be considered. An applicant for admission as a transfer student must furnish a transcript of courses taken at all college-level institutions he or she has attended. In all such cases, acceptance is based on an examination of the total record of the applicant.

Students seeking advanced placement or college credit for Advanced Placement (AP) courses taken in high schoolshould have their scores on the Advanced Placement tests sent to the School of Engineering's Office of Student Services.

International applicants must submit a transcript of all work taken at other institutions, secondary and collegiate. An official copy of all certificates (matriculation, intermediate, secondary school, B.S.) must be forwarded by the appropriate officer of each school attended to the Office of Admissions before any applicant will be considered for admission. In addition to submitting scores on the standardized tests listed above, all applicants from non-English-speaking countries are required to complete successfully the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Requests for TOEFL information should be directed to Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey 08541. Arrangements for advanced standing on the basis of work previously undertaken must be made at the time of application for admission.
