Textbook: None required. Reading assignments will be distributed in class. Students should purchase a large three-ring binder in which to organize class materials and notes. The binder should be brought to each class meeting. The syllabus, additional course information and assignments will be available via the World Wide Web (https://imappl.org/~EGPP101). Students must have a user account in order to access this system.
Course Description: This two-credit course is required for all engineering majors and is designed to provide an exciting, hands-on, design-centered introduction to engineering design. The course will also provide information on engineering education, the engineering profession, and basic concepts and tools. Students will be introduced to the engineering design process, and will complete engineering design projects in preparation for subsequent study of engineering principles.
Classes meet twice per week in the Downing Auditorium for large group workshops and lectures. Satellite classrooms will be used for small group activities. Assigned groups will work in small teams to complete one mini-design project and one major design-and-build project. In addition, students are required to complete assignments, homework and quizzes. Students are also required to complete a professional resume.
Attendance Policy: All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly. Students who are absent from class are responsible for obtaining the information and completing the work done during that time. The faculty will hold students responsible for regular and prompt class attendance. Auditorium and satellite attendance will be taken daily. Late students will be considered absent. BE ON TIME!!
Grades: Grades will be based on performance on design projects; performance on exams, homework, quizzes and participation in class (attendance). Students must place their name, student ID, section and section instructor on all assignments. Grades for group projects and assignments will be based on participation of all team members. Grades will be assigned according to the following criteria.
