EGPP 101 Major Design Project

Design and Build

Project Description: Design of a Small Bug Robot:

You are to design and build a small robot that looks like a bug. This robot can be controlled manually or remotely. However, this robot must contain special modifications to solve a real-world problem that is selected by each student team. For example, one robot may be designed and built to crawl through pipes in damaged buildings to assist with search and rescue missions similar to the disaster that occurred on September 11, 2001. Student teams may purchase a robot kit and build it, but must apply the robot to their selected problem. This directly addresses the social responsibility that engineers have to addressing serious real-world problems. (Be creative here, points will be given for creativity.)

A sample robot kit that can be used for this project can be purchased along with a book that describes how to build it for approximately $30.00. A link with additional information is listed below. However, if a team finds a cheaper/better robot kit, this is entirely acceptable and encouraged. Students must present receipts for reimbursement up to the $50.00 limit to get their money back. Also, please address the following bullets:

  1. The complete project must cost less than $50.00
  2. The project must address a real-world problem that is selected by the student team.
  3. Teams should order their parts quickly as they will need ample time for mailing and building.
  4. All presentations/reports must be turned in on time to receive that maximum number of points.
  5. The team with the best overall project as determined by the EGPP101 faculty and teaching assistants will receive an award.
  6. Additional materials (not supplied in the kit) may be used.
